The Hidden Value in Your Kitchen Waste
Every day, thousands of restaurants, hotels, and food service operations across the UAE generate vast quantities of used cooking oil (UCO). For most, it is simply waste to be disposed of. But at Neutral Fuels, we see something different: a high-value feedstock that powers a cleaner future.
Since 2011, Neutral Fuels has built the UAE's most comprehensive UCO collection network, transforming what was once a disposal headache into the backbone of a thriving circular economy. Here is how the journey from fryer to fuel actually works — and why it matters more than ever.
The Problem with Improper UCO Disposal
When used cooking oil is poured down drains, it solidifies and creates blockages in sewer systems, leading to costly infrastructure repairs and public health risks. When dumped in landfills, UCO decomposes and releases methane — a greenhouse gas roughly 80 times more potent than CO2 over a 20-year period.
The scale of the problem is significant. The UAE's hospitality sector alone — home to over 22,000 food establishments — produces enormous volumes of waste oil. Currently, less than 50% of the UCO generated in the UAE is properly recycled, with most of the collected oil coming from commercial kitchens rather than households.
This gap represents both an environmental risk and a massive untapped opportunity.
How the Collection Process Works
Neutral Fuels operates a tech-enabled collection system that makes UCO recycling seamless for businesses of all sizes.
It starts with free, purpose-built containers provided to every partner site. Our bespoke ROC (Recycled Oil Container) was designed in collaboration with professional chefs for ease of use in busy commercial kitchens. For sites with different space requirements, we also offer standard drums and IBCs (Intermediate Bulk Containers) for high-volume operations.
Our cloud-connected driver app tracks every collection in real time, logging oil quantity and quality from pickup through to delivery at our refinery. This digital chain of custody ensures full traceability — a requirement for maintaining our ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) accreditation.
Importantly, Neutral Fuels holds all necessary permits to collect UCO across the UAE, and we are the only company licensed by Tadweer to collect UCO in Abu Dhabi.
From Waste Oil to World-Class Biodiesel
Once collected, UCO undergoes a refining process at our local facilities to become biodiesel that meets three international quality standards: EN 14214 (European), ASTM D6751 (American), and UAE.S 5023 (local). This triple certification means our fuel is compatible with any diesel engine without modification.
The environmental impact is substantial. Biodiesel produced from UCO reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 86% compared to conventional fossil diesel. And because the feedstock is 100% waste-derived — no virgin crops, no palm oil, no imported raw materials — the lifecycle carbon footprint is among the lowest of any transport fuel available today.
The Business Case for UCO Recycling
For food service operators, partnering with a licensed UCO collector delivers tangible benefits beyond environmental compliance. Businesses receive annual green certificates documenting their contribution to carbon reduction — increasingly valuable as ESG reporting requirements grow across the UAE and GCC.
Fair compensation for supplied oil provides a modest but meaningful revenue stream from what would otherwise be a waste management cost. And operational simplicity — free containers, scheduled pickups, digital documentation — means sustainability does not add complexity to already demanding kitchen operations.
Closing the Loop
The circular economy model that UCO collection enables is elegant in its simplicity: restaurants cook with oil, Neutral Fuels collects the used oil, our refineries convert it to biodiesel, and that biodiesel powers the very trucks and fleets that serve the same restaurants and businesses. Our collection trucks themselves run on biodiesel, and we use recycled containers — closing the loop at every stage.
With over 26 million litres of UCO recycled and more than 80 million kilograms of CO2e saved to date, this is not a pilot programme. It is a proven, scaled system that demonstrates what the circular economy looks like in practice.
